Hi Stephen and Jake ,

I absolutely had a blast listening to it!
You really got the main ideas of my little game spot on.

I never expected that something I created can make people
stick to a story and it's characters and even can make people laugh. This is something so lovely to hear!

I feel really honored that you featured my game  in your podcast.
Keep up the good work, guys!

I love this game! such a creative use of GB Studio. Im really impressed with your inventory system! How did you even create that in GBS!?!?!?!

(1 edit) (+2)

Thank you!
For the inventory I used 8 variables to track if the player got the different items and toggled the sprite actors according to that.
In the inventory scene, the player changes to an arrow and cannot move due to invisible walls.
I track the selected item with another variable.
Then the player can move to another item by pressing the according buttons.
I had to write a ton of if-else to do this manually and it's just a mess in the editor :D

Little but very fun game.  I really enjoyed it. Thanks for share this experience :)

Yes, no problem. I'm really happy so many people enjoy my game! :D

Hey really nice game and story behind it. Nice to see how you go unlocking different sections and progress with new clues. Just few things, at the end it says "Concrats" instead of "Congrats"
Also, some scenes when you talking to the different persons it would be nicer is they close once you get to the end, sometimes if you press de A button, you have to read it all over again. Or maybe have the dialogs listening for some B press to exit of them.
On the basement, even after moving the boxes around, there are some hitboxes that stop you from moving freely. And some sequences repeat, like even when you have the comic book in inventory if you go to the cellar the book is there once again and you can replay all that, same with the dog and the T-Bone. Few minor details to polish I guess.

Hi, I'm glad you liked my game!

There are a few grammar and spelling mistakes I still need to fix. Maybe I will find time to make an update to the game at some point.
I also agree with your other sugestions, but sadly GBStudio (the engine) is rather limiting. But maybe I can implement some of them. Again thank you for your feedback :)

Ohh ok. Yes I was watching some videos about GB Studio. Looks really interesting and it's interesting the things that can be done with it, but also know the limitations, that for sure restrict what can be done under certain circumstances.

Cute!  What a fun little game.  I enjoyed it.

Thank you!

great game! I'm trying to learn to create games on unity and I can't figure out how to make a 2D puzzle game. This game was perfect! Really great story and humor. 10/10

Thank you. I wish you good luck developing your game, just try your best! :)

A really fun game

Thanks a lot :D

Excellent! I just beat it, kept me highly entertained for a good 30 minutes. :)

Good to hear you enjoyed playing it :)

It was fun! Please give it a try.

Thank you for giving it a go! :D

A detective story on Game Boy, that's very cool !

The limited palette of the Game Boy is a bit creepy so it's perfect for grim stories such as a murder in a big "haunted" mansion.

On the downside it might be a bit buggy at some points, it lacks a Save feature (but maybe it's not possible with GB-Studio I don't know) and sound effects imo.

Have you ever played the Detective Conan (Meitantei Conan) games on Game Boy ? You might like them I think...

Glad, you're liked it.
I agree with you that the game is a bit buggy at some points, but most are due to restrictions of eighter the GB-Hardware or GB-Studio (although some things are possible but really fiddely right now).
But all in all I'm quite happy with this game, good that you had fun playing it.
Conan for GB sounds really cool, maybe I can pick it up at my local flea market at some point..

Is this playable on a mobile browser?

Yeah sure, try it :)

I can't play this game on android

Good to know that, I've tested Chrome, Opera and Cake for mobile and didn't seem to encounter issues. Do you know which browser/app you used for playing my game?

I using Chrome

Ok thanks for your report, I will look into it.

Cant exit the 1st room? I have some free sprites you can use!

Your stuff is really cool! If you give it another go you might want to talk to the paper on the table (remember most people can't read upside down :)

This was simply fantastic ^.^ I think it is absolutely perfect in every way, a murder mystery, retro pixel-art style, it made my heart happy, it had silly commentary, inventory puzzles, a fancy ghost, and a passion for hats.

AND on top of all that goodness, you can talk to the plants, that's the cherry on top ^.^ loved this very very much

Great to hear that you enjoyed it this much! Giving me feedback is something I really appreciate. Good that you enjoyed the silly commentary as much as I do (and the hats of course!) ;)

I think you did a fantastic job on this, to be completely honest I literally only had one hiccup in the gameplay where the scootable boxes in the basement disappeared but the blocks they were on formed an invisible barrier, but even with that I just waddled around them so it didn't hinder gameplay at all, that's literally the only issue i came across ^.^ Also, fantastic work on the game page itself, 10/10 brilliant use of space around the play window!!!!! I'm a graphic designer so I'm a sucker for details like that.

Lol I just can't say enough about this game

Thank you so much. Attention to detail is always the key ;)

Absolutely, I wish you all the best and I'll be on the lookout for more games from you in the future!!!

Great work! I really enjoy playing GB Studio games, it's great to see people still want to develop for it. This is a really well thought out game, the story had me hooked and I couldn't help but stick with it until completion. Loads of clever secrets to find, a worthy Game Boy title that is as good as any original cartridge!

Wow, that's a hell of a compliment, thank you. I definitely enjoyed developing with GB-Studio. It's really is easy, has an awesome community and is Open-Source! Although GB-Studio lacks some kind of textual representation of it's scripts as code (nestet if's, variable assignments) can look pretty confusing and ugly. But again thank you that you enjoyed my game this much! :D

This was a fun short experience! The detective and his commentary were quite charming! I kinda...stumbled upon solving who the murderer was. Might just be my fault, but I kinda feel that issue could occur for others as well. Perhaps the murderer should be properly acccused? (EX: Pick from a list of potential suspects, then show the evidence as proof.) Bit of a nit pick on my end but wanted to share my thoughts regardless!

One thing I wanted to ask- is there audio in this game? I played the game and didn't hear any sounds, so I thought it might be on my end. No worries if there isn't, it was still a good experience! I made a video with commentary. Keep up the great work!

Thank you for your in-depth review. It's really interesting to see how people play my games. I definetly enjoyed your commentary!

You're right there isn't any audio, although there really could be some, atleast  background music.

There's actually a scene where you have to choose between the different suspects, but you missed it, because you showed the right evidence to the right person before that.

You could have entered the 'desicion dialog' at anytime if you say that you're ready while talking normally to the butler.

Maybe I should look for another solution to this problem as I think it's natural to show everything to everybody before they think they can solve the case.

But again, thank you for your efford! :)

Very nice!

Thank you :D
